Layer modes in GIMP

Layer modes are also called blending modes.

Selection of the layer mode changes the appearance of the layer or image depending on the underlying layers. To change the appearance of the upper layer there should be at least one layer under it.

To set the layer mode, you should select it from the dropdown list in the Layers menu. Normal is the standard mode of all the layers.
